I am thinking of starting on accutane. I get large cysts and the rate
of 2 per month for years now. I have been on and off antibiotics
many times. But the scarring made me sick and wanted to try one last
time with the best which sounds like accutane.

I did a lot of reading in the net about the side effects and ignoring
the depression and other stuff, which I am anyway I was wondering
about dryness.

Now I have EXTREMELY oily skin, even if I wash my face every hour, I
can see oil in my face at the end of every hour.

I was wondering if anyone knows for ppl with an oil factory in thier
face does even accutane work or it also fails. I would be glad if my
face became dry because I do not think it is possible for even
accutane to do that and if it succeeds in doing that, I am sure it
will reduce acne also.

Are there ppl for whom accutane also did not work and the doc told
them "your face is so oily that even accutane gave up on you"

I had super, whacking, madcrazy *0ily* skin.

After about a week on Accutane, the oil was gone and I mean gone. For the next
six months.

I'm two months Post right now and my skin is still pretty dry.

No zits either.

Same here. I was amazed at how good my skin felt on accutane. 4
months post here, so far so good.

Is this a coincidence or what? Me too.

After 10 years of sufferring, Accutane stopped my acne within 1 week.

I have been lying to my doc and have extended accutance for the past 8 months.

By the way, here in Canada, derms seem to prescribe accutane without a
2nd thought.

My derm did asked me only for 2 blood tests in 8 months ??

Thanks,
mmp.

Hmmm thats not good, not good at all, when was the last blood test?
You should get a blood test every month you are on accutane (which I
did, I hate needles). A longterm intake of high dosage vitamim A (ie
accutane) can result in permanent liver damage. Doesnt happen very
often but thats why they need to check your blood regularly to stop
treatment if needed. Are you still on full dosage?

My derm only gave me a blood test the first two months of a five month
course.
I believe the reason cited was that if it did no harm in the first two
months it wasn't going to (perhaps this reasoning was on the premise
that I was slated for a five month course).
They would have NO reason not to give me a blood test as often as they
pleased, such as every month of my course, for example. And I certainly
wouldn't have had any objection.
Also I had been on methotrexate and decadron chemotherapy extensively
about 8 years ago, (also no joyride for the ol' liver) and they new
about that as well.

Some of these conflicting posts remind me of the old saying...

"A man with a watch always knows what time it is--but a man with two
watches is never sure."

I had extremely oily skin, cysts and bad acne. After trying various other
drugs, my doc sent me to a dermatologist who put me on Accutane for 7
months. It cleared up my acne within the first few months. The oily skin
disappeared, but came back after I finished the treatment. I was 5 years
acne free, but then it came back. It is not nearly as severe (no cysts),
but I am very disappointed to be dealing with acne again. I was told that
some people have to do another course of Accutane if it returns, but I
haven't done it yet. I'm still contemplating.

I am a bit hesitant to do Accutane again. I am 37 (male) and took
Accutane as a young teen. I cannot really remember if I had any side
effects, but the med. did it's job. I was acne free for years, then in
the early 90's the acne started to surface again...My family doctor
prescribes Tetracycline and Retin-A, which cleared it up. Unfortunatly,
for the past year and a hal, I have been fighting acne again. I have
been prescribed Keflex (500mg twice a day) and Tazorac, which the
Tazorac I had to stop because it was too harsh. So I have been
prescribed Differin gel...I have been on it one week and have noticed
that the acne has gotten a bit worse. We have both agreed that if I do
not see improvement within 3 months, I need to see a derm. The problem
is, for the past 10 years I have been treated for depression, and I
have read that Accutane can cause depression. So I am kinda in a
difficult position. Any advise?

I'd say that makes you better off. I was depressed as hell before
starting accutane, and being on it didnt make a fig of difference. I
figure the risk is to people who first experience depression for the
first time on accutane and cant deal with it.

As you probably know, accutane has many side effects. Cleansing and
scrubbing excessively will stimulate more oil production. Before you
resign to trying accutane, I would suggest trying the following:

Home Care-
- gently exfoliate face daily.
- benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.
- ice your face 1-2 mins in a.m. and p.m.

Professional Care-Paramedical Esthetician
-enzyme treatments
-chemical peels
-extractions

All of these will help you in the fight against acne.

Hello,

I did 2 treatments of Accutane when I was 19 (male) and it cleared my
acne up for many years. I have very oily skin.

I am now 35 and just completed another treatment of Accutane after
trying antibotics for a few years first.

While on Accutane, my skin was great, not oily at all. It was
wonderful to have 'normal' skin for those 6 months.

However, I think my skin is returning to normal...as the oiliness is
returning more each week I am off Accutane.

I noticed no changes in my emotional attitude...other than feeling
better because my skin was better.

I tend to believe that those reports about depression have been blown
out of proportion. If you are concerned, have a support system in
place to help monitor your state of mind during the course of
treatment. Let your friends and family know what you are doing and
ask them to let you know if they see a change in your attitude.

Good luck,
Nick
