Dry skin, hair, lips. These are GOOD side-effects in my opinion. It'll also
remove any blackheads you have, shrink your pores, and dry up any oil
glands.
The less desirable are flakey skin and scalp (use moisturizer), and muscle
aches. The aches are only mild, exactly as if you've been overexercising
recently, and come on and off during treatment. As long as you don't need to
do a huge amount of physical activitiy it'll be a non-issue.
Then there's the more rare. Some hair loss ocassionally (this may be caused
by lack of biotin or dryness, so take Vit E for the skin and biotin for your
hair). Also, you have to watch what you eat, because your triglycerides will
be raised while on the drug.
That's about all worth mentioning. Oh, except for the most common effect of
accutane... clear skin!
I'm a few months in and loving it. I'd want to take this stuff even if I
didn't have acne (which I don't any more!) (I won't though, heh).

Ok thanks. I have a few questions. What exactly is biotin and what will that
do for your hair? And did you personally have hair loss? I guess that is
something that I"m concerned about, the side effect of hair loss.....is it more
common or a rare side effect? What side effects did you experience? How long
does it take before it will start working and you see good results? Are the
side effects really that severe as most people think? I guess I"m kind of
worried about the hair loss, which I don't want and what about nose bleeds and
stuff like that? Are nose bleeds a side effect? Is it common or rare and do
you experience that also? And accutane doesn't affect tattoos do they? I know
that I have a lot of questions, it's just that I'm seriously considering
accutane when I see the derm next week. I think I have only mild but it's very
annoying, and have tried most antibiotics and they don't work. I've also tried
B5 but didn't think that worked as well as I wanted......and I hear with
accutane after you're finished with it, you'll have REAL clear skin for at
least a few years if it comes back, and even if it does come back, I heard that
it won't be as bad as before your course of accutane. Also question on the
blood tests......what do they do? Draw the blood on your arm by your elbow?
What if I was going on vacation for 6 weeks in about a month and won't be able
to get the monthly blood test but don't want to wait until I get back to start
taking accutane if I do? Would I be able to take the first blood test 4 weeks
after I start accutane, and then take the next one 6 to 7 weeks later? I know
I have a lot of questions, it's just that I'm seriously considering it as I
said and have many concerns. But super clear skin is just like a dream for me.
I think I only have mild, but it's consistent and I'm irritated by it. For 6
years I"ve had this, and only for 6 months during the 6 years was I mostly
clear. That was when I first took minocycline. But I guess after 6 months it
didn't work anymore. And I'm wishing for skin that clear again, but I am
concerned about side effect such as hair loss (is it common or rare, and does
it happen to you? and will your hair be fine after your finished on accutane
or will it only last a few weeks?) More info on biotin and if that will help
keep your hair. Also concerns like accutane doesn't affect tattoos? And other
effects such as nose bleeds are they common or rare, muscle aches. Is
depression a true side effect of accutane or is that just BS? Does accutane
harm your liver? Will it dry your skin severly or just mild? I mean your
lips, mouth, eyes, scalp, etc? If you could take your time and answer all of
my concerns I would be very grateful, I know I have a lot of concerns, but it's
about time I did something to end this once and for all. And isn't 21 too old
to be dealing with this? Most people my age had it only for a few years, like
from 14 to 17 or 15 to 18, etc. Will this be out grown soon? This is a
teenager thing, I'm too old to have this, so when will it go away? Thank you
very much and have a great day. >> Stay informed about: What are the side effects of accutane? |

21? Too old? Gee, try 38.
Accutane works for some but doesn't work for others. The side effects can
be intolerable. It was for me. I would never recommend it at all.
Personally, I can control my acne with diet changes. Now my skin is clear
and I'm healthier to boot.
Take care,

Woah that's a lot of questions with no paragraphs. I'll try and answer them
all.
> hair loss
I think it's 5-10% of people who see some mild hair loss, and I think in 90%
of cases it grows back after treatment. If you're prone to hair loss then it
might exacerbate it slightly. I've had no change in hairloss at all.
> biotin
There was a study that showed accutane depletes biotin levels. Biotin's good
for a number of things, including your hair, so I (and many other users)
figured why not take supplements, it can't hurt. As for WHAT it is, type it
into www.google.com
> how long before getting better
1.5 months in my case. It got a lot worse before it got better, but then it
suddenly cleared up completely. Just a bunch of red marks fading away now.
> should I take it
I'd say YES. Dermatologists are really beginning to lighten up on their
usage. There are several papers in the medical profession that are
encouraging accutane usage for mild but persistent problems as well as the
usual cystic acne. My derm is friends with the founding father of accutane
research (WJ Cunliffe) and both of them would want to put you on a course.
> will this be outgrown soon
Probably somewhere over the next few years, but I'm near your age and got
fed up waiting to "grow out", which ocassionally doesn't happen so well. If
it's bothering you then get the drug, don't spent the next few years of your
life waiting, what's the point when you have a perfect solution?
> nose bleeds
Depends if you get a medium or high dose (as do all the side-effects). I
think because of your mild but persistent acne, you'll be on a slightly
lower dose that will dodge a lot of the nastier side-effects. On high doses
your nose linings dry up too, and it's more likely to break and bleed.
Hasn't happened to me though. Perhaps 15% of cases? Don't pick
> blood tests
Yes they are taken at the elbow. These don't need to be taken every 4 weeks
on the dot, but it's important to get a blood test before starting, then
every few months after starting to keep an eye on your triglycerides .
Unless you're overweight by a large amount then it won't be an issue, just
really an extra bit of reassurance. There's no worries about your liver
beyond these tests, which I assure you are nothing to worry about normally.
> depression
Haha, no way. How COULD you be depressed when your skin is as clear as it's
been since hitting puberty? Saying that, the onset (when it gets worse
before getting better) could make you feel a bit down, but knowing the end
is near is the best feeling I've had in years.
> tatoos
Don't get a tatoo done while on accutane, don't get anything done which will
involve flesh healing (piercings too). But anything you currently have will
be fine. The reason is simply that accutane slows the healing process.
Conclusion
Yes, there's a long list of side-effects for Accutane, but you can forget
about all but a few of them in most cases. Your skin and hair will become
dry (if you're oily, this'll be a blessing, if you're not, just use a good
moisturizer). Your lips will become chapped (get a good lip balm, aquaphil
or whatever). But beyond that you won't notice much else. If you want to
read more info try http://www.google.com and try in 'accutane diary' or
'accutane side-effects', etc.
My opinion on the subject is quite strong. I got messed about on so many
useless drugs like minocycline before I went in and DEMANDED to be put on
accutane. Luckily I was also seeing a new dermatologist when I did this, and
he was pro-accutane. But I wasted so many years, and for what? Chapped lips
and some flakey skin? BRING IT ON!
The thing is, a lot of derms see the acne and not the person, and say "not
bad enough for accutane". But really, if it's causing you psychological
distress (annoyance) then that's all that matters. Research on google.com,
and make a decision about whether you want to take accutane to be free from
acne. Once you've made that decision, don't let any doctors tell you
otherwise and put you another antiboitic. UNLESS (DISCLAIMER) they recommend
against it for serious medical reasons
Good luck with your future!

Ok it didn't work for you, but clearly this and your diet are related to
your thyroid problems and allergies (soy, etc) rather than a "superior"
treatment for acne. It's always good to hear both sides of the coin, but you
should put it in perspective. I'm sure you don't want to scare people away
who would otherwise be helped.

Thanks for answering my questions, I have a few more questions, could you help
me out with them?

For how long will it get worse before it gets better? I mean for how long will
that last? How long did it last for you? And does it start as soon as you
being accutane or after a while? Is that common or rare?

So accutane won't affect current tattoos then? Or piercings either? it won't
make the tattoos look bad or anything?

That's the opposite side of your elbow where the skin is soft and your veins
are correct? They don't go higher or draw the blood from any other place
right? They won't go on say the upper arm by your shoulder area? And an
important question I have is can you drink liquor while you're on accutane?
Don't tell me I can't drink at all during the whole course of accutane please.
But am I able to drink?
Also if I go on vacation for about 6 weeks, and I am not able to have a blood
test during that time at all.......is that ok? I could have my first blood
test a month after I start accutane.......but then I"d have to wait the month
and a half to have the next test......Is that ok?
You sure that the nose bleeds aren't common? and the hair loss isn't that
common either? I guess everything I listed in this message are the most
concerns I have. Does biotin help for my hair while I'm on accutane? Because
I don't want hair loss, kind of concerns about the nose bleeds (don't want a
nose bleed at anytime if I"ll be walking down the street, at the mall, at work,
while on vacation etc), don't want accutane to affect tattoos at all, don't
want liver problems, and concerns if I can still drink alcohol while on
accutane. I'd know not to take accutane with alcohol obviously, but wondering
if I can still drink a while after taking accutane. I'd know to buy lip balm
and stuff for the dry lips and to use mosturizer on my scalp because they will
be dry. Also concerned about joint pain? is that the same as muscle aches and
is that common or rare? And does it happen often or not? I just have a lot of
concerns and worries I guess, but it's the first time I've seriously considered
accutane like I am right now. Clear skin would be a dream. Please help me out
with these questions, it means a lot to me. Thank you very much and have a
great day. >> Stay informed about: What are the side effects of accutane? |

My nose bleeds lasted from the second month through to the end. Along with
all the other bleeding I had. I pretty much bled from wherever my body felt
like bleeding. When my period lasted for an entire month, I finally got off
the accutane.
Just be prepared.

> For how long will it get worse before it gets better?
Everybody is different. Many people don't get worse. If it's a big issue for
you, then ask to get put on a dose that is raised over the first month,
that'll introduce you slowly and lessen the chance of any bad breakouts.
> So accutane won't affect current tattoos then?
Not a bit. Like I said, healing is the issue. Normal tatoos are done
healing.
> nose bleeds and hair loss
No they aren't common at all. If you got a nosebleed it would be a mild one
and probably a one-off, it's not a persistent thing through the course.
> They won't go on say the upper arm by your shoulder area?
There would be no reason to unless they couldn't find a vein (not a heroin
addict I assume?). I've had my blood taken quite a few times and it's always
the inner side of the elbow (whatever it's called).
> Don't tell me I can't drink at all during the whole course of accutane

Alcohol increases triglycerides. Accutane increases triglycerides. Mild
drinking is probably fine as long as your triglycerides are in order. If
you're planning on getting drunk though, I personally wouldn't recommend it.
People have done and been fine, but everyone is different, and I don't want
to play games with my liver.
The muscle pains are nothing much. You might be doing something straining or
exercising and feel a bit sore. Really, it doesn't bother most people.

No of course not, just don't want them to draw blood near my tattoos on my
upper arm, that's all.

When I go on vacation for my 6 weeks I was planning on getting drunk because it
is a vacation and I'd really like to enjoy it. So are you saying that I should
wait until I get back then to begin accutane? Or would I still be able to take
it while on vacation? I guess this is also an important question on wheter or
not I should take accutane now. I mean I really would like to begin accutane
now, but i don't want it to affect the vacation that I"m going on for 6 weeks
by me not being able to get drunk.
Also can take you take accutane while taking Concerta? It's a different
medication, just curious if you can take both of them at the same time. Thank
you so much again for your help. >> Stay informed about: What are the side effects of accutane? |

> No of course not,
Sorry, I was joking about the heroin.
> vacation
If you're going on vacation soon it might be wise to put acctuane off. You
musn't be in the sun a lot with accutane, because you'll burn very easily.
That coupled with the possibility of things getting worse in the first
month, and your restricted alcohol consumption might put a damper on things.
Getting holiday-drunk frequently would NOT be a good thing to do, and it can
actually give people bad hangovers. So perhaps you should start after you
come back? Then again, if you're going away in 1+ months to somewhere not
too hot, it may be worth it to have clearer skin. Your call.
Methylphenidate (Concerta) will be fine with accutane, but of course,
mention it to your doctor as a matter of procedure.

This is simply untrue. That site is full of misinformation. It's run by a
lawyer. Doesn't that trigger any bells in your head?? Millions of people
take accutane. To date there have been around 150 people who committed
suicide while on the drug. Being a cautious person, I did my research before
going on accutane, and the numbers of depression/suicides on accutane are
the same as the national average. So yes people have got depressed while on
accutane, but as many get depressed off accutane. Now, we KNOW there's a
link between persistent/bad acne and depression/suicide. So, a life of
definite depression, or a 1 in a 1000 risk of getting it? Hmm, tough one.
Standard disclaimer applies. If you have a family history of serious
sporadic depression then be careful. >> Stay informed about: What are the side effects of accutane? |

That in No Way addressed the potential link between suicide and accutane.
Whether the actual number is 150 or 250 hardly matters in that there is
a potential complication from the medication. The OP (original poster)
had asked about depression, and I felt your answer showed that you were
unfamiliar with the serious potential risk.
I have nothing against accutane, just thought that your reply in no way
addressed the seriousness of the potential complication. >> Stay informed about: What are the side effects of accutane? |

Ok, first, the best website for you to research Accutane is
http://www.ragforum.com read through their posts and that will answer
99% of your questions/fears/concerns. Second, the side effects (I'm
currently in month 2 40mg a day) differ from person to person. Expect
very very chapped lips, expect some redness (mild/extreme depending on
your body). Personally I've had 90% of all the side effects that are
known, thats why I'm back down to 40mg, I was at 70mg a day but the side
effects were too severe for me. On the depression issue, I was and
always have been depressed. However, after being on the 'tane for 2
months, my depression has gotten considerably worse. Again, this varies
from person to person so chill, don't get too worried. If I had to deal
with every side effect for 5 more months I will. I'll to go to hell and
back to get rid of this acne and when your on Accutane, thats generally
what it's like.
But it's the best stuff out there and it will work if you can stick with
it. Just make sure to get those monthly blood tests, that will save your
life if you liver gets all crazy. >> Stay informed about: What are the side effects of accutane? |
