sorry for the relatively raunchy title of this post (and for perhaps
graphic language herein)...but it's pretty much what I have:

I red, sometimes itchy, but not too bad, rash between the top of my
butt cheeks, starting just above my rectum, and extending even
slightly above the crack of my butt into roughly the shape of an
upside-down triangle...i think i've had it for a long, long time, but
just recently decided that it might be something i could get rid of
fairly easily....anyone ever heard of something like this...i thought
at first it might be the result of vigorous (or perhaps not enough,
who knows?) "wiping" after a #2...but I've been trying to be careful
and delicate of late and it's not getting any better...ideas?

Sounds like something related to diaper rash in infants. Once
microbes that thrives in dark damp places gets a hold of you, it can
be difficult to get rid of them.

I suggest you try using a shampoo that contains pyrithione zinc (a
powerful and broad spectrum antimicrobial agent) like Zincon, DHS
Zinc, some versions of Head & Shoulders and many generic competitors.
It may sting a bit the first time you use it, but the second or third
time, (after you start to heal and are less sensitive) try coating the
affected area with full strength shampoo a few minutes before bathing,
to increase the effect.

This stuff is a great surface anti infective agent for many kinds of
skin problems, besides dandruff. Let me know how it worked (either
here or by email), if you decide to try this.

I don't think it is because of the way you wipe after pooping. If this were
the case, you would know it when you do the laundry. However, you can try
Charmin Kid Fresh or other wipes for children. They make containers that you
can carry around with you.

I would try some antifugal clotrimazole or other antifungal cream. You can
get generic versions pretty cheaply at drug stores.

And you can try putting petroleum jelly over the rash after you shower
(leave the skin a tiny bit wet) or try zinc oxide cream.

If these things do work, see a doctor.
