I have been using Retin-A for just over 4 weeks now and I am very
disappointed with this product's effectiveness. In fact, I believe that I
would have been better off without it, for it appears to have made more of
my acne appear in the first week or so of using the product, yet it hasn't
really made any of it disappear.
Do I need to give it more time or should I just discontinue use of it in
favour of some other treatment? And what other treatment bar Accutane is
there available for me?
Thank-you for your help,
James >> Stay informed about: Retin-A proving to be ineffective |

I am on retin-a micro 0.1% and have been for a little over 3 months. It is
going to take at least 8 weeks until you notice anything. My worse time was
week 4-5 and everything was being pushed out. I have the occasionally zit
every now and then that takes a day to surface, and haven't had any cystic
acne since. My acne was moderate. The only thing I am working on now is
trying to control my skin oil and see if I can make my pores less visible.
Also, I'm still waiting for the red marks to go away which can take as much
as six months. I plan on using retin-a for perhaps the rest of my life
because of its benefits and I have also passed the time where it causes skin
irritation. Nothing is going to make the skin look like your a baby, at
least to my knowledge... If you are looking for this "hollywood star" skin,
I would recommened investing in make up...

i would have been better off without Reitin-A, IMO, it made my condition
worse, however it was a stepping stone i needed to convince my derm i needed
accutane..do you have any specific reason for not wanting to take accutane?
(other than the usual scaremonger stuff)

Worried about the potential side effects primarily and also the fact that
you are not supposed to consume alcohol whilst on it - I enjoy going out
with friends and having quite a few drinks at least once a week and
therefore I see accuntane as being unsuitable for me...

no offense, but if you're not willing to give up alcohol for a few months,
how serious are you about defeating this this.. and for the record i drank
every so often.. maybe every other week..and i was fine.

I agree with xaleb. Four weeks is just too short of a period to see if this
medicine actually works. It took me 8-12 weeks before I saw positive
results. Just try giving another 4-6 weeks before deciding to try something
else.
Good luck

I was blessed taking a couple weeks vacation, it's tough to take 8 weeks off
otherwise you are probably facing your worst case of a breakout ever for two
months. The biggest positive results are the benefits not just from acne,
but diminishing wrinkles and reversing sun damage while using it, there is
also the possible positive effect it has on reversing skin cancer
development. It might not be for everyone but I think far too many people
cut it short because of the "long" two noticeable months you have to endure
until you get results. It's a catch-22. good luck

Thanks for all your comments - they really are appreciated. The only reason
I was asking for advice was because I was becoming disillusioned by the
product, for it says result should be seen in 4 weeks, and because I have to
witnessed any positive results after 4 weeks of treatment, I thought it was
simply ineffective in my personal case... I will keep using it now that I
know it takes longer to work.
One final question, I did read that B. peroxide should not be used when
using retin-A for this may neutralise the effects of the latter product.
However, can I still use retin-A in the night, washing it off in the morning
and then applying B. peroxide during the day? Will this still hamper
retin-A's effects?
Thanks !!

I heard the same thing about BP and Retin-A. I did exactly what you said
(Retin-A at night, wash in morning and apply BP-based med) and had no
problems with reduced effectiveness.
