I'm curious: Why is Retin-A available only through prescription?

I started using the Retin-A topical cream a few weeks ago, without
consulting a dermatologist. Retin-A is an over-the-counter product,
like benzoyl peroxide, in the country I'm at. Are there any hazards
that I should watch out for?
