Just my uneducated guess:
Maybe the retin-A micro is working. That is, it is preventing the
shedding skin cells inside your pores from hooking together and forming
a plug. In acne-prone people, the plug mixes with oil and bacteria
(thus creating the chemical byproducts which cause the inflammation
known as a pimple), and also prevents oil from reaching the surface.
Without those plugs, the oil reaches the surface.
