Hello
I don't have the worst skin in the world so I am sorry if it seems I a
belittling the real acne problems out there by my simply questions.
I ALWAYS get acne on the back of my legs, and near the bottom of my butt.
Sometimes it even leaves scars. I don't bother it. I use a loafa (sp) sponge
and Dial anti-bacterial Body Wash. I always scrub everywhere well. Its
unsightly though and I want clear skin back there. Can anyone suggest
anything?
thanks
MB
p.s. I am on the Atkins diet, although not for this problem so I dont think
my diet is a problem. It has helped but not gotten rid of it. >> Stay informed about: hi, question. |

Well, you aren't really treating the acne at present. Dial, like almost
every liquid antibacterial soap uses triclosan. There isn't any research at
this time that proves whether triclosan has any effect on acne or not.
Also, it takes 2-3 minutes for triclosan to kill any bacteria, so if you
wash it off before that, it isn't killing anything. Sponges are havens for
bacteria, so make sure you clean the sponge before every use.
There are many, many different products and strategies out there, which also
depend on your particular skin type, and there just isn't a "magic bullet"
that works for everyone. You might start with something like Neutrogena
On-the-Spot Acne Treatment. It contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, which is the
most effective over-the-counter topical antibacterial agent for blemishes.
Apply a light coating over the acne-prone areas (not just the spots!) once a
day. It is important to be consistent, and also to give the product a
chance to work.

I agree with Stuart.
I would not use a loofah. They sit in the damp shower and just breed
bacteria..
Even sponges are difficult to keep clean and dry.
Just use a fresh washcloth every shower, if you must.
But I'd buy a body scrub (i.e. liquid soap with "scrub" particles in
it). Preferably with salicylic acid or tea tree oil in it. Use that on
any problem areas. Or Skinclean would be good for this.
Follow up with sal acid moisturizer.
(I wouldn't use BPO just because it would bleach your
shorts/pants/whatever).
Should clear up easily once you ditch the dial and loofah.

Well I use the dial for other issues.
I have a Pilonidal sinus which is a condition on the tailbone area and it
needs to be kept super clean everyday. I definitly do leave the dial on a
long time in the shower because of this too.
Anyways thanks for the suggestions i will ditch the loofah and stick with
washclothes and try not to use dial in those areas. thank you!

Um no, what does that have to do with anything?
And what is "seriously obese" ?
I am on the Atkins diet for my health and for some weight loss.

I just don't like that Atkins that tells you to eat no carbs, that's all. >> Stay informed about: hi, question. |

From the location of your problem, I would bet that it is caused by
hairs being rubbed off at skin level and getting ingrown (getting
trapped below the surface and coiling up and causing irritation and
infection). Unfortunately, unless you are a contortionist, it is hard
to get your eyes close enough to this area to see if this is actually
the case.
I have this same symptom, but am fortunate enough to have a patient
wife and a pair of very fine pointed tweezers that she uses every few
weeks, to pull the coiled hairs back above the skin surface.
Immediate relief.
Without this sort of specific treatment, you are left with the choice
of abrading the surface skin regularly, to help the trapped hairs
through the surface. Whatever rough material you decide to use to
exfoliate, make sure you rub only in the direction the hair lays, so
you don't make lots of other broken off hairs. I was somewhat
surprised to discover that the hairs on the back of my thighs heads
upward.

He doesn't (didn't) say NO carbs.
20 grams is for induction. From that point on, you add HEALTHY carbs
(like veggies and salads, not junk food) by 5 gram increments until you
find the setpoint number that your body will burn and not gain weight.
That number is individual, but often is 80-120 grams of carbs per day.
A certain amount of carbs are needed for brain function. A percentage of
protein can be converted to meet this need, as well. Atkins never
advocates zero carbs. The lowest is 20grams, and that is just for a week
or two of induction.. to start lipolysis. If weight loss isn't an issue,
one would just add in healthy carbs until they found their maintenance
carb intake amount.

Atkins=GAY.
For your information, the term "GAY" refers to sexual preference, *not*
whether something is good or bad. To the best of my knowledge, Dr. Atkins
is not a homosexual, but even if he were, what would that have to do with
his diet? Or are you just flaunting your ignorance and advertising your
homophobia? That's my bet, because you flaunt that ignorance of yours
regularly in other ways by typing things like "R u seriously obese?" ARE
YOU incapable of typing out a simple sentence? >> Stay informed about: hi, question. |

He was married (to a woman).

It is popular at the moment, but I'm not sure something that has been
around for 30 years can be considered a fad.
Pernickety? (persnickety? if you meant that, I don't know how it would
apply?) Obsessive? Same.
Attention seeking: again, it's been around and ignored since my mom was
my age. When it began to get studied, it finally caught on. I think
perhaps the Atkins version of low carb is having a moment of glory. But
the spotlight to the role of carbs I think is for the overall good of
everyone. For decades fat was made to be the "bad guy", and yet obesity
went on the rise. I think the low carb trend has done a lot of good in
exposing how the body handles carbohydrates. And the role of fiber in
choosing healthier carbohydrates, and by focusing that the food pyramind
and rda of carbs is just too high for most of, unless we want blood
sugar problems later on in life. And by showing that good fats are good
for you, etc.
fwiw.
A lot of people have lost 100 or more pounds on this diet. They might be
high camp about it, but they deserve to be, don't they? >> Stay informed about: hi, question. |

years so I should be offended, but I must say that last post is too funny. >> Stay informed about: hi, question. |

Exactly. Faddy is the best term for it!! The diet seems to come around every few decades only because it does
"seem" to work. I don't have time right now to explain..but you can read the entire mechanism, clearly
explained in Arnold's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, page 684. >> Stay informed about: hi, question. |
