Hi. I was just wondering if anyone here has used birth control pills to stop
acne. I've been on Retin A Micro for 3 months and it hasn't made my face
worse, but it hasn't exactly helped. Everytime my face starts to clear up,
around my period it breaks out. =( So my friend told me that it's probably
more hormonal and I should try going on the pill. I just wanted to see if
anyone else has gone on it to treat acne. Thanks.

I believe it's only one type of bcp that is supposed to actually work. I
think it's Diane? I'm sure others here will have more information on it. I
was on bcps for many years and never had my acne clear up because of it.
But I wasn't on that one particular type.

That BCP one you talk about is the only one that did a study to check acne.
That not mean that it is only one that works- just only one that did research
study to prove.

Ortho Tricyclen is what I went on right after Accutane. I was on the regs
before that and had a mini-breakout during "special time" and switched to
the TC. It worked very well, but I stopped taking it cuz it made me crazy!

-PS: I don't work for Ortho =)

Diane BCP are available in Canada, Ortho Tricyclene (sp) is one of the US
brands that is supposed to help clear skin as well. When I was on OT my
skin cleared up. I changed to a different triphasil and my skin went to
h**l.

I now use Zovia and my skin is back to being fine with topical care.

No matter what is advertised you'll need to try and see how your skin reacts
along with what the BCP do to your body

There is one called Dianette, that is said to work for acne, I personally
would not reccommend it as it has a reputation for causing depression, which
it did with me

good luck in finding one that works. If you do, post it and let us know

I've used Ortho Tri Cyclen and Diane 35. The OTC made my already oily
skin even oilier, and worsened the acne situation. The Diane 35
worked liked a dream; decreased oiliness, cleared up my skin, no
significant weight gain and lessened my PMS. I was on Diane for about
9 months.I stopped using it b/c my packages started coming fr. Turkey
and Hong Kong although I was ordering fr. an online pharmacy based in
New Zealand! (I live in the US, and Diane is not an FDA approved
drug.) A couple months after I stopped, I started to lose my hair.
I've been using Rogaine, and I guess it's helping somewhat since I'm
not noticeably losing a LOT of hair.

I went to see my derm last week, and he started me on Retin A Micro as
well. He also suggested that I go on a BCP since my acne was
hormonal. I've heard good things about the Jasmine pill, but I need
to discuss my BCP-related hair loss issues w/ my GP. From my
experience, I believe it is more difficult to regrow hair than it is
to get rid of acne, at least the type of acne I've got, so I'm
hesitant to try another BCP. FWIW, my derm suggested a low dose pill.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Retin A Micro to work.

HTH, and good luck!

Grace,

Have you had your thyroid checked? One of the main symptoms is losing your
hair.

No I haven't, but I've often wondered if I should. I don't have any
of the other symptoms that are associated w/ thyroid disorders though,
so I never thought too much about it. I guess it's another thing to
ask the GP, thanks!

Hi Grace,

Definitely check it out. But make sure you send me your test results. The
lab values are changing but not all the labs have updated themselves. So,
uninformed doctors are undertreating thyroid patients. It's really a
problem...

Does Ortho Tricyclene have the same risk of blood clotting as the diane
does? My Dr wants me off diane because I have a high clotting factor
already. I'm looking for alternatives with the same skin benefits.

Is that a BCP or something else?

I used Dianette (Diane in US, I think) for several years and it worked
absolutely beautifully. My doctor made me come off it a few months ago,
though, because of the thrombosis risk (even though I'm 22, a healthy
weight, take plenty of exercise and don't smoke :\). I was put on Cilest
instead, but I've found myself getting more spots, which is getting me down
as I hoped I'd seen the end of it after 10 years! I'm still using benzoyl
peroxide.

I'd be interested if anyone has had any luck with contraceptive pills other
than Dianette. I've just read that Microgynon can be successful, but I'd be
grateful to hear of other experiences.
