My daughter wants to use this heavy medication, but she really doesn't have
cystic acne--just stubborn closed comidome type with lots of tiny bumps and
the dreaded redness/oiliness. From my perspective, it doesn't seem bad, but
I know it's not fun at all for her. I see nothing in the prescribing info
on using Accutane for anything except cystic acne.

Dont use it. Not worth side effects if acne not cystic.

Noel,

How old is your daughter? What other medications have you tried? Have you
tried changing her diet? Refined sugar, breads, and nuts tend to cause acne
in many. Accutane can be very dangerous for some, I would not suggest it.

Many of us on this board refuse to use Accutane
but sometimes it's tempting. Then we're reminded
of the dangers and it just isn't worth it. Kids
hear about this stuff as the "magic bullet" for
acne but what they don't hear about are the cases
it doesn't touch or the vulnerability to their
health.

It sounds like your daughter would be a good
candidate for "Pro-Acne", the Wal-Mart clone of
ProActive. Some users of this product make the
mistake of thinking it's all about the cleanser
and forget about the other 2 products when in
fact, the one with the most activity is the small
bottle of "repair lotion" - the Wal-Mart brand of
lotion claims to have "time released" benzyl
peroxide - this is the ingredient that addresses
acne for many. Remind your daughter that this
product (benzyl peroxide) is a bleach, so care
should be taken after application to cleanse hands
before touching colored clothing or hand towels.

Good luck, and I hope your daughter inherits your
good sense about Accutane and life in general.

Another effective treatment program is the Rx -
Benzamycin (Erythromycin, Benzoyl peroxide). Many
find it has a tightening effect when applied and
with a light coat of ProActive repair lotion on
top of it relieves the dry, tight feeling.

Insure sure your daughter is faithfully cleansing
and applying the products as per instructions
daily. Then if she still isn't improved, continue
to stay away from Accutane Smile

Perhaps her friends with bad acne went on it and have great skin, so she
sees that and wants it?
I doubt a legit dermatologist would prescribe it for her anyway, if she
only has minor acne.
But take her to a derm. He can prescribe her something topical to help.
Or take's Chere's advice and try one of the Proactiv clones. (I prefer
the Klear Action, but they are all similiar). A derm will probably start
her out with something similiar anyway.

You don't say how old your daughter is, but now is the time to get her
on a good skincare regimen. Cleansers for her skintype, etc. And if she
wears makeup, only noncomedogenic stuff. (I highly recommend Bare
Escentuals makeup). I use that over Clinac O.C. (oil control) and it
makes my skin look much better while actually looking natural. Great stuff.
Anyway, definitely get her some good products from otc or a derm. Give
those a few months to work. Accutane has lots of potential side effects,
and is usually only prescribed for scarring acne.

double-dittos these comments on diet. So many youngsters are overloaded with
soda pop drinks, sugary/starchy junk foods, etc. If you made just one
adjustment, it would be to get her to try eating fruit for a sweet snack instead
of candy, etc.
I'm probably an extreme case, but if I ate refined carbohydrates (and in my
case, anything high in fat) or lots of dairy foods, I would probably wind up on
Accutane.

I have used Accutane for non-cystic non-nodular acne. While I was on
it my sebum impacted pores cleared and the daily occurence of pustules
vanished. My skin never looked better and it made me feel great.

as i said in another thread, be VERY CAREFUL with accutane/roaccutane.

i know have Crhon disease thanks to that dangerous treatment.

in girls, and my sister had acne, the problem most of the times is quite
simple, you just have to take her to a derm, and he prescribes the RIGHT
pill (for birth control), my sister has know great skin just by taking
Diane 35.
