Hi.
This break-out is not unusual at the start of an Accutane course. Your derm
should have told you to expect it.
It does show that the Accutane is working, so try to see it as an
encouraging sign.
You can take aspirin to reduce the pain and some of the inflammation. A
topical anaesthetic cream may also help.
This break-out may last two or three weeks, but then you will see a great
improvement overall. Your skin will begin to dry, the redness will subside,
you will have fewer new spots and have noticeably better skin.
Then, it may be that the possible side-effects of the drug will become a
nuisance. Over-drying, cracked lips, dry eyes, joint pain. These are not
inevitable and can be controlled to a degree by reducing the dose.
It's the total overall dose received that makes the biggest difference in
the long-term success of Accutane treatment. You need to aim for around
115-130mg per kilo of body weight, so if you need to reduce your daily dose
to control the side effects, you just take the drug for slightly longer to
get the best overall dose level.
If that seems a bit bewildering, ask your derm to explain Total Cumulative
Dose to you.
Hope this helps.
