ive been on accutane once in my life, and am about to try b5 now.
anyone actually done both and want to share their experiences with the
two treatments (good AND bad)? besides extreme dry skin and i think
some major nose stuffy problems, i don't think accutane caused that
much problems for me. can i expect b5 side effects to be much less
harsh than my accutane side effects?

thanks!

Yeah, the b5 side effects are not as serious, as far as we know,
especially if you low dose, take a b-complex, and watch out for
problems. (pains, hair loss, dry eyes, etc)

If you can go on accutane, go on it. Reason being: often it cures acne.
Maybe you need more than one course to be cured, but that alone is worth
it, especially if you didn't have any big side effects from it.

Bugger about the B5, is that as deuce said, it often stops working, and
people must take more and more of it to maintain clear skin. This gets
expensive and potentially unsafe. I've never heard of anyone that has
gone off B5 completely and stayed clear. (There may be some possible
puberty exceptions, of people that outgrew their acne, irregardless of
the B5, though). There are some people that can stay on maintenance dose
(2g) and stay clear. But an equal or greater number seem to need to up
their dosage after a year.

So since at best B5 seems to require lifetime maintenance, I'd take
another shot at accutane if your skin warrants it and you can afford it
(insurance or whatever wise). B5 seems to be more of a temporary
solution. And since it's untested, at least with accutane much is known
about it, and you will be tested for any problems. i.e. picking the
poison you know being better than the poison you don't know..

fwiw.

i am 28 now, and i went on accutane probably about 10-15 years ago
while in grade school i believe. it actually did good to me. it was
truly the ONLY thing that ever made a difference in my skin. i don't
get the big pimples i used to all over in high school, but now i have
what seems to be less severe, but equally annoying problem. my skin
is extremely oily and i have bumpy, rough skin, with white/black heads
all over. i especially have bad skin in my shaving area. so i seem
to have gone from severe acne, before accutane, to mild acne. gonna
see what b5 can do.

I am 36 and have been on Accutane for 3 months now to try and get rid
of acne that was mild to moderate, but refused to quit. I would only
take so many years or worrying each morning when I woke up how many
blemishes has come up overnight and how well I could hide them. Sad

I am VERY pleased to say that my side effects have been temporary and
very mild. I have had two minor nose bleeds from the dryness in my
nose that stopped very quickly and I had some minor headaches for a
couple of days that went away. My lips are somewhat dry, but nothing
anyone would notice looking at me and applying Aquaphor to my lips in
the morning after my shower and at night seems to solve most of that
problem.

I apply Cetaphil lotion to my face (with SPF 15) in the morning also
and it seems to resolve any flaking I may have.. I don't feel dry at
all once I put it on and no one knows I am wearing it.

My skin is almost FLAWLESS otherwise. This is the first time since I
was 14 or so that I can leave the house without even having to look in
the mirror to see how my skin is! I don't have to use any other meds
or cover-ups at all. It's amazing. I have gotten one or two small
blemishes during these three months but they dry up quickly and are
gone within 2-3 days not to occur again.

My doctor says that, from his experience, my lack of side effects and
how well and quickly my skin has responded to the Accutane is normally
a good sign that I will stay clear after I am off it after 5 months.
I'll keep my fingers crossed! My blood work has been fine too.

I take 60mg a day and all is well. I would urge ANYONE to at least
give it a shot. I was very worried before I started but am very happy.

--DON"T APOLOGIZE. I well understand the impulse, still, don't do it. The
counter-impulse, to desire to look presentable w/o it being a cliff-hanger
each day, also is quite understandable.

--I had a similar experience, but the acne did eventually come back. I had
two or three courses, separated by several years. I wish they could figure
out why some people eventually revert. Although constantly irritating, acne
does tend to become milder as people age.

--Good Luck.
