It is a nutrient, an organic form of sulfur that is involved in
protein synthesis and other biochemical processes in animals. It is
supposedly present in all living plants, but is destroyed by cooking
temperatures. All proteins hold onto other proteins by disulfide
bonds. If you are short of the right form of sulfur (or enough sulfur
bearing amino acids) your tensile tissue is not properly
interconnected, but patched together on a molecular level. At least
this is the hypothesis I have read.

I buy mine at Costco, about $8 for 500 1000 mg tablets (I take one a
day).
It is sold almost anywhere vitamins are sold.

I started taking it a couple years ago to strengthen my nails. Before
they grew completely out so that I could tell if it was doing
anything, I noticed than all my old (childhood) scars had started to
become almost unnoticeable. My hair also grows faster. I never
trimmed my eyebrows, my entire life. Now I have to trim them every
few months, or I am looking through them. My nails finally did show
some improvement, also. It seems that repairs are just carried out
more perfectly since I have added this to my diet. I also heal
injuries faster.

I sanded my elbow almost to the bone in a bike wreck as a teenager.
It left a dime sized waxy scar that often cracked and bled if I leaned
on my elbow. I had this big shiny thing for almost 40 years. Then,
within about 6 months of adding MSM to my diet, it disappeared.
I got my 72 year old mother to take it a month before she was
scheduled for heart valve replacement surgery. They said she would
require at least a week of hospitalization before she could go home.
When they went in and they did the final tests before surgery, she
needed two valves instead one. I helped her walk from the car to her
door 4 days after the surgery. Her doctors said they had never seen
anyone recover from open heart surgery so quickly.
I can't say that MSM will help your particular scars, but I am
convinced that it is an important nutrient that the typical modern
diet does not very well provide.
