I have a white scar on my leg from a rock climbing fall. It's about 6 years
old, white, and is pretty flat now (but still noticeable).

Anyone know of a cream (or anything) that I can do to reduce the appearance
of this scar? (Besides laser surgery).

Thanks.

After six years, MSM is probably the only thing (short of seeing a
plastic surgeon) that might help..

(sunscreen and vitamin c the first 6 months to a year is the best way to
minimize scars)

Wait a sec... sunscreen??? What would the active ingredient in sunscreen be.
What about using kenalog. Wouldn't that help too???

MSM: Methyl sulfonyl methane:

Just called my pharmacist and you can get it over the counter.

Well, I guess I'm just gonna try it out!

It is a nutrient, an organic form of sulfur that is involved in
protein synthesis and other biochemical processes in animals. It is
supposedly present in all living plants, but is destroyed by cooking
temperatures. All proteins hold onto other proteins by disulfide
bonds. If you are short of the right form of sulfur (or enough sulfur
bearing amino acids) your tensile tissue is not properly
interconnected, but patched together on a molecular level. At least
this is the hypothesis I have read.

http://www.msm.com/MSMResearch.cfm

I buy mine at Costco, about $8 for 500 1000 mg tablets (I take one a
day).
It is sold almost anywhere vitamins are sold.

I started taking it a couple years ago to strengthen my nails. Before
they grew completely out so that I could tell if it was doing
anything, I noticed than all my old (childhood) scars had started to
become almost unnoticeable. My hair also grows faster. I never
trimmed my eyebrows, my entire life. Now I have to trim them every
few months, or I am looking through them. My nails finally did show
some improvement, also. It seems that repairs are just carried out
more perfectly since I have added this to my diet. I also heal
injuries faster.

(snip)

I sanded my elbow almost to the bone in a bike wreck as a teenager.
It left a dime sized waxy scar that often cracked and bled if I leaned
on my elbow. I had this big shiny thing for almost 40 years. Then,
within about 6 months of adding MSM to my diet, it disappeared.

I got my 72 year old mother to take it a month before she was
scheduled for heart valve replacement surgery. They said she would
require at least a week of hospitalization before she could go home.
When they went in and they did the final tests before surgery, she
needed two valves instead one. I helped her walk from the car to her
door 4 days after the surgery. Her doctors said they had never seen
anyone recover from open heart surgery so quickly.

I can't say that MSM will help your particular scars, but I am
convinced that it is an important nutrient that the typical modern
diet does not very well provide.

Hey, JP...

This sounds really amazing. I'm out to get this.
Say, does it make a difference if you take it with
meals or not. Also, could you please let us know
exactly what you eat (i.e. the particulars of
your diet)? Also, hpw long before seeing
improvements?

And for the hair, what about eyebrows and eye lashes
out of curiosity. Do those grow too. Hey, maybe I'll
even give it to that chick that dumped me for my acne
that kept complaining about her eye lashes...

Thanks, I really appreciate it,

A.E.

I think your body can store MSM for some time, so exactly when you
take it is not very important. I did read somewhere that vitamin C is
involved in some of the biochemistry that also involves MSM, so I take
a bit if that also.
I am on no particular diet. I think it was 6 monyths or so before I
became aware of the changes in my scars, so I can't say how long it
takes before things start to change if you are watching for it, but it
is slow and subtle at first. Probably the old saying about a watched
pot applies.

As for the hair, I think all my hair grows a bit faster and thicker.
My guess is that hair may not be your body's top priority as a place
to use protein, so if it grows well, it is a sign that you are getting
plenty and the right kind.

I hope you report back in a year or so, perhaps with some before and
after pictures, so I can see if it works as well for you as it does
for me.

Best of luck.

Thanks.

Just got these 1000 mg tablets from the drug store.

I guess I'm gonna take one per day and see. Smile

Is that a reasonable does?

Fingers crossed.

Bye,
