How many more times do we have to hear this overblown and incorrect
assertion that 'accutane causes depression'. It is simply not the case.
Accutane may have been implicated in a number of depression cases and even
suicides, but there has never been any conclusive proof put forward. Every
drug is monitored for side effects and if someone was to commit suicide
whilst on another drug, them it would be noted that ' Victim was taking
XXXXX at the time.'
I've had three full courses of Accutane and take low-dose on a regular
basis. I have noted in my Accutane diary when I had been feeling down for a
few days, but I reckon that I could put that down in any diary every....
Essentially, taking Accutane brightened my spirits and lifted my whole life.
Personally, I think that suicides whilst on Accutane are, in the main, due
to unrealistic expectations of the drug. You have severe acne, you wait and
pray for accutane, you get on a course and three weeks later you look the
worst you have ever been- not exactly uplifting at that point.
Having severe acne causes more depression and suicide than could ever be
attributed to accutane. My own derm Prof has had several suicides amongst
acne patients due purely to the severe mental stress that chronic acne can
induce.
If your only reason for not taking accutane is the slight depressive link,
then you're misguided and possibly denying yourself the true solution to
your acne problem.
I can sympathise with you, as I'm also 48, but don't fall prey to nonsense
propaganda......
