Hi,

Need a bit of advice here Smile

I have been using Benzoyl Peroxide for 3 days (5% cream). The problem
is that my face becomes red and I feel my skin becomes very dry
especially around my lips. Should I stop my medication or what happen
to me is actually normal?

And also, is there anyway that one can reduce the red and dryness
reduce by BPO?

Thanks

Heya,

I used to get quite a red (swollen) face from BP - the sad thing is I
didn't even realise it was the BP for about 2 years since I used so
many products!

It sounds like you have an allergic reaction to the stuff, like I did.
My advice is stay off of it; I don't know how severe the reaction is,
but if it's reasonably bad then get off the stuff. Most people's
reaction to BP is barely noticeable. *grin*

Good luck,
- JB

Mix the benzoyl peroxide in your hand, with facial moisturizer. About 1
part benzoyl peroxide to 4 parts moisturizer. Or do half and half. This
will solve the problem.
Benzoyl peroxide almost always needs to be mixed with, or followed by,
moisturizer, to prevent redness and irritation.
HTH!

The last time I used a 5% BP cream, my face became very red. This slowly
subsided as I became more used to it, but I was always a little pink.
You might try switching to a 2.5% BP.

first thing you need to do is test for reaction, apply the BP to your
forearm or something and check to see if you get a bad reaction.. if not
try starting off with 2.5% (neutrogena on the spot), however regardless of
whatever strength you use.. you simply have to moisturize afterwards.. get
an oil free moisturizer with at least SPF 15.. if you dont.. the BP combined
with any sun at all will light you up like a christmas tree.
deuce.

Just use 2.5% BP solution (like from Neutrogena, which is a fine product and one
I've used for years) and if you need to, mix in a little pure jojoba oil with it
to make your skin feel softer. Jojoba is wonderful stuff and WILL NOT ever
break you out. Never start out with 5% right away. You have to work up to it
over a period of one or two months. And save the 10% industrial strength stuff
for your back and chest. IMHO

And as for me, I wash with Aveeno for Acne day and night, leaving it on for a
few minutes and then rinsing well. Try this and see. It worked wonders for me!

My recommendation would be to use a good oil-free moisturizer. I would
not recommend jojoba, coconut or any other types of oils. Also an
alcohol free toner, preferably one with aloe vera during the day
helps.

DDF, created by a renowned dermatologist makes both. You can get their
Ultra Lite Oil-free moisturizer here:

Good luck.

Don't group jojoba with the other oils. Night and day, my friend. Do your
research. Many will tell you it's the ONLY thing that can soften their skin and
even help in the healing of it. I have very sensitive skin and prone to break
outs, but not with this "oil". It is extremely wonderful stuff!!!

<snip>

jojoba isnt an oil, and unlike using 'oil-free moisurizers' you can be 100%
sure what the ingredients are, because there is only one!
I'd agree with not using coconut oil though!

I had a weird reaction to Benzoyl Peroxide.
I used it on and off for about a year and a half with no problems. It
did help my acne. All of a sudden I suddenly developed a reaction to
it. My face was very red and raw. I had to discontinue using it.

My doctor has finaly refered me to a dermatologist ( for the seccond
time - first try on accuatine did not have lasting effects)
The only problem is - after waiting 8 months on the waiting list my
acne is now looking not to bad. I wouldn't mind but it does tend to go
through phazes. I bet that the week after my appointment it will be
back to its usual tricks!

I had a reaction to Neutrogena's tinted BP. I stopped using it until
redness disappeared. I made sure that I wasn't using anything new
either during that time. I tried it again and redness was back.
Non-tinted works fine for me.
During the day, I use Neutrogena's moisturizer SPF 30 during the day
as BP may cause sensitive to the sun. Neutrogena's BP 2.5% (non-tinted
for me) seems to be the least irritable available in the stores in US.
