Once a woman who gave me a facial told me that a good adjunct to any
acne regimen is to freeze a styrofoam cup of water in the freezer.
Take it out of freezer and gently rub the exposed ice (at top of cup)
all over your face for 10 minutes (no stopping). Will be uncomfortably
cold the first few times you do it but then you get used to it. Should
be done after cleansing and before applying topicals.

Place back in freezer. The next day, unwind some of the top of the
styrofoam cup revealing more ice. Repeat application. Do this every
day for 10 minutes.

She said something about it tightening up pores, killing bacteria, and
being all around good for your complexion. I tried it for a week and I
have to admit it felt good once I was done, but I quit simply because
I wasnt disciplined enough.

Any thoughts on where this could help? Any scientifically-minded folks
out there have any insight on the viability and potential
effectiveness of such a treatment?

Icing is the "new" trend.. besides the obvious benefits, they say it
helps circulation (blood to the skin to help it) and by reducing
inflammation, topicals can reach deeper to the root of the problem
(bacteria, etc)..
The paper cup thing is exactly the technique sage skincare suggest
(http://www.zerozits.com/Instructions.htm )

Dr. Fulton recommends the same thing,
http://www.acnebook.com/articals/ice.html

Dr. Dubrow (The Acne Cure) also recommends icing, including storing BPO
in the fridge and applying everything cold, plus compresses. He says it
reduced bottleneck inflammation that prevents BP from getting deep
enough into the pore..

hth!

Using ice-cubes locally on new acne lesions was something I first saw on
this NG by posters such as Jamesk111 and WesTexSun (IIRC). Some *real*
old-timers may recognise those names.

I've used the 'ice-cube trick' with some success. Take an ice-cube &
hold it for 20-30 secs on the spot when it first appears. Do this until
the cube melts. Then wash the area and apply topicals.
