I did try retin-A several years back, in high school, and stopped
because it tore up my face -- redness and peeling. And acutane --
sure I've thought about it, occasionally still do. But, I've got pale
skin (and I mean snow white, I'm a redhead) that burns severely and
easily, and I'm always outdoors in the sun. Enjoying outdoors and sun
I can't give up. Plus I have a lot of other health problems, some of
which are listed as *side effects* of acutane, so I have fears of
existing conditions getting worse plus adding more problems to the
list.

Ann, I'll bet you are nowhere near as snow white as I am - my
grandmother on my father's side was Norwegian and my mother English.
Both my parents were blond and very fair-skinned. I am also a
natural blonde (helped by colourants now of course!) and I literally
cannot buy any cosmetic foundations for my face in a light enough
colour except in England or Europe - Scandinavian products have the
right shades for me - so I import some from there.

I never ever ever ever go out into the sun and sit or walk for any
length of time! Period. If I have to do something outdoors for
longer than 10 minutes on a sunny day I will plaster on 50% sunscreen
(and there is a 50% one believe me) and wear a wide-brim hat - long
sleeves and legs covered.

The instructions for any Retin-A (acutane eg) are very specific about
avoiding sunshine while taking or using the medication. The
instructions are likewise very specific about pregnancy, and
cholesterol. If the stuff isn't for you, then it isn't for you. I
was great for me and I am still using Isotrex (a Retinol gel) twice a
week. I use an antibiotic skin lotion as well on any acne-prone
areas.

My acutane and Isotrex medications warn about dry, red and flaking
skin - also dry lips and eyes and nose. If these temporary
side-effects are not worth it, then as I say it's not for you.

It has helped hundreds and hundreds of people, which is why in my
country it is subsidised for patients of authorised skin specialists.

Cheers

Daisy

Same here!

Accutane and sunscreen should be fine but I also have pale skin and
Retin-A caused me to miss work with what it did to my face.. it was
like chemical burns and I did not go out in the sun at all! My skin
couldn't even handle a small amount of Retin-A.. it was HORRIBLE!
