Hi Guys,

I have been on Minocycline (100mg daily) for two years now.and have decided
its time to stop the medicine. My teeth are turning yellow and it really
cant be good for my health to be on it for so long.

Initially, I would want to stop it on a trial basses and if I get massive
outbreaks, I will probably end up going back on it.

My question is, what is the best way to come off it? Should I just cut it
completely and see how it goes? Or is it better to come off it gradually?

Thanks

I don't think that it makes much practical difference. For the normal
1 week or so antibiotic course, you either want to be on it, or off
it, since a low dosage may help evolve resistant strains of bacteria.
But after taking it for a couple years, you almost certainly have
already done this, and are carrying them around on your skin (and
possibly elsewhere) with their population just being suppressed but
still surviving wherever the drug concentration is lowest. An example
of such a place might be in places somewhat isolated from your blood
supply, like the outside of your skin.

Many people have a bacterial bloom, for this reason, when they stop a
long term antibiotic course. There may be some slight difference
caused by a taper or an abrupt termination, but I don't think it makes
much difference.

You might try doing something completely different, that kills
microbes on your skin, during the transition, to wipe out the hold out
colonies. I would try bathing with an antimicrobial dandruff shampoo
that contains pyrithione zinc, to lower the chance that a big bloom
will occur just as the antibiotics disappear. This stuff is a very
active, broad spectrum antimicrobial agent that kills just about
anything, by a very different mechanism than how antibiotics do. But
eventually, you will have to regrow the protective bacterial
population on your skin that will keep things in balance. But you
might as well start with a clean slate.

Thanks for the advise John. Is a shampoo such as 'Head n Shoulders'
adequate? and how often would you recommend bathing in it?

I will also purchase some products which contain good bacteria just to give
myself a bit of a head start.

Thanks

Some variations have pyrithione and some do not. You have to read the
labels. A couple other good brands are DHZ Zinc and Zincon, which
both have double the concentration of PZ that H$S and most of the
generic competition have. If you are just lathering with it and not
doing the pre bath soak process, you can use it every bath for the
first week or so after you stop the antibiotic. Be sure to rinse
thoroughly, or it will make your skin feel tight and irritated.

I don't know what such a product would be for your skin, but you
probably need some good intestinal bugs also, like you get from live
culture yogurt. You don't want some opportunistic bug moving in on
you with all your normal fauna killed off, and then, no antibiotic to
keep everything down. Once you have been clear of the antibiotic for
a month or so, and if everything seems normal, that danger is probably
past.
