Post subject: Advice Needed: Problems With Glycolic Acid
Archived from groups: alt>skincare (more info?)

I recently went to a cosmetologist with concerns about the patchiness
of my skin.

She recommended that I use glycolic acid pads at a concentration of
20% (which she sold to me).

I used them, and found out later that I should wear sunscreen (she did
not tell me this, nor was it mentioned on the product). Even after I
wore sunscreen, however, I found that some parts of my skin were
becoming red and itchy, and on my forehead a whole series of tiny
bumps appeared almost overnight (and these definitely were not there
before).

Needless to say I am a little bit upset that a product I bought for
the sake of improving my skin appears to have damaged it.

I can't see a dermatologist any time soon, but I wonder if anyone
could answer my concerns for me: is my new skin condition (the bumps
and the redness) the result of allergic reaction, or sunburn or
anything else? Is this likely to be permanent damage? What can be done
about this?

I only used the acid three times before I noticed these negative
results, and obviously I have discontinued it. But what can I do about
the effects now?

Thanks in advance.

Omar, there is a good website that talks about Glycolic Acid and issues surrounding the use.
It is: http://911skin.com/glycolic-acid-skin-care-information.html

Hope this helps!

A good cosmetologist would have given or at least suggested a skin patch
test (even if testing took a few days), and been eager to know what your
'results' were. She also should have given you a plan for long term care
as glycolic acid is not something you use forever.

My only probem with glycolic acid was that it cut the skin at the corner
of my lips for a few days as new cells rose -- nothing noticeable to
others but quite noticeable to me when I ate or drank.

I suggest you read up on it as advised but also revisit that
cosmetologist and ask what she's willing to do to remedy your situation
or at least refund your cash so you can see a good dermatologist.

She may be licensed and not want to have a disatisfied customer; she may
also be uncooperative .. but it can't hurt to ask. Good luck! =KD= Smile
