Post subject: Achy muscles/joints on Accutane
Archived from groups: alt>skincare>acne (more info?)

I'm in my third month on Accutane (Sotret) and have noticed lately that
I have a sore neck and back; I always feel like I've slept on it wrong.
Also, strangely enough, my hips are often very stiff when I go to get up
out of a chair.
i'm not in the best condition physically and I sometimes have to sit
for long peroids, but I've never noticed this before.
I re-read the warnings with the Sotret and it said to consult doctor
immediately if any of the following "unlikely but serious side effects"
occurs...and among them is "back, joint, or muscle pain."
In other words, I don't know if the drug is causing this, but I'm
afraid that if I tell the doc he will take me off of it just to cover
his ass and then my acne will come back--this drug was my last chance to
look normal again.
ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE ON ACCUTANE EXPERIENCE THE SYMPTOMS I"M
DESCRIBING???

There are worse things than pimples.....pain is an indication that something
is wrong. That is why they put warnings on drugs. Remember the people who
died from Baycol? http://edition.cnn.com/2001/BUSINESS/08/13/bayer/ They
probably had muscle pain, too, and didn't report it. Your heart is a
muscle.

Tell your doctor immediately.

Then, see an esthetician to clean your pores and extract; clean up your diet
and environment (including hair preparations and anything else that comes in
contact with your skin). Eat something green and leafy every day (not
iceberg lettuce), drink a lot of water and look for more alternative healing

Hi L Kelly.

That's a fairly good page on acne that you have. I have a few questions
that pertain to me. I'm a raw foodist. As long as I stay away from sugar,
B12 and Tea Tree Oil, then my skin is clear.

So, my questions to you are: Do you know why B12 would make me break out
horribly? And I do mean horribly. Do you know why Tea Tree Oil in any form
will make me break out?

Oh, eating nuts and peanuts also causes me to break out.

Any insight would be great.

<Do you know why B12 would make me break out horribly? >

Can't be B12 because it's part of your body and you would be broken out all
the time; it's like being sensitive to calcium or iron which we also have
circulating in our blood constantly; has to be a binder or preservative or
other additive to the supplement. Look on the B12 package for "inert" or
"other" ingredients. Do you have an absorption problem? Vegetarian? Why
B12?

<Do you know why Tea Tree Oil in any form will make me break out?>

You're not the lone ranger.......Tea tree oil is very potent and, by the
way, NO essential oil should be put directly on your skin...can cause severe
sensitive reaction.

Many people cannot use Teatree oil and it is also said that it can be
harmful to pets such as dogs, cats and birds.

Of course, the quality and purity of the oil and concentration in relation
to carrier oil are important factors, too; some people use fragrance oils,
thinking they are essential oils and they are two very different animals.

I've used all sorts of vitamins with B12 in them. I always break out. Last
fall, I got two B12 shots and that really destroyed my face. So, I don't
think it's a filler. I've read that there are others that get acne from B12
as well. Yes, I know what you mean about it being necessary for our bodies,
but for whatever reason, I can't take it. Yes, vegetarian. When I take
supplements they are they kind with no allergens in them as I used to be
allergic to soy, corn, etc, etc.

The tea tree oil problem is the same in any product. If I use a toothpaste
with tea tree oil in it or a face cleaner with tea tree oil in it, etc.

Thanks for any input you can give me.

I love when alternative "healing" people try to blame acne on diet. I
live in a big city where I see a lot of homeless people on the street
every day who probably havent eaten anything green and leafy in years,
and subsist on alcohol and the occasional bag of doritos, and most of
them dont have acne.

From what I've researched (and the experiments I've done on myself)
acne is much more genetic than it is dietary.

Actually, I know for a fact that my acne is completely diet related. When I
stick to my diet, my skin is clear. When I cheat, my skin breaks out. I
break out when I eat processed sugar, nuts, a vitamin or supplement with
B12, or use a product with tea tree oil.

There are many causes of acne. If people prefer to put their money into
pills and lotions that never seem to work and don't want to eat a better
diet, then that's up to them. But don't discount the diet thing....Because
for many of us, it IS the answer.

Thanks for your concern; I did consult my dermatologist after reading
your response.
They said the stiffness in joints is to be expected as your body
produces less axle grease from being on 'tane. Not everybody
experiences it, though, and only if the discomfort from this is severe
is it considered serious.
They said to take ibuprofin for the discomfort but the pain, while
considerable, isn't severe enough for me to wuss out and start taking
pain relievers.
I was more concerned that it indicated something more serious, and
wondered if anyone else was having the same symptoms.
I've read the other postings where the ongoing debate rages on whether
acne is diet related. I say that if you're prone to acne, eating
unhealthy foods sure isn't helping.

<They said the stiffness in joints is to be expected as your body produces

Yes, so would you stop putting oil in your car's engine for any reason? Why
not? Some people have more axle grease to spare. If lack of lubrication
causes pain, I think it might be an indication that your body is trying to
protect itself from damage.

Pain means something. It is your body's warning system.

Pain is not to be forced out with drugs if the reason is known and
preventable without otherwise doing harm.

<take ibuprofin for the discomfort>

Good thing you decided against it. Ibuprofen is a cause of leaky gut, which
can affect skin heath. Might make problems worse. Look it up.

<debate rages on whether acne is diet related. >

There shouldn't be a debate. People can get to know their own bodies if
they pay attention. What is good for one may not work for another. A
food/mood diary is best. Some foods don't affect the body for 2 days and by
that time, you've forgotten what you've eaten.

<I say that if you're prone to acne, eating unhealthy foods sure isn't
helping>

There is the kicker..tomatoes and oranges are great foods but cause acne in
some. Wheat, eggs and milk can do it too as well as nightshades. Has to do
with your particular system.

That's why there is a debate that shouldn't be..none of the "experts" ever
figured that we may be different so standard experimentation doesn't work
because we have different physiology to begin with.

It's a lot to think about.

My first knowledge of the skin/diet connection began many years ago when I
read a nutrition book (which was something new to me; I hadn't gotten to
college yet to become a chiropractor.late start).

At the time I had been fighting acne for over 20 years ..big, purple, lumpy,
infected things all over my back and shoulders, sometimes on my face. (As a
teenager, I shopped for turtleneck swimsuits because I was so embarrassed.)

After reading the book, I felt that I needed calcium and magnesium and
enough fiber and fluids to clean out daily. Two weeks after my diet change,
my skin was perfectly clear...just some scars which have faded.

Since then, I've helped many people clear their skin without drugs, just
food choices specific for their bodies and vitamin/mineral supplements. One
person was helped by vitamins, extra calcium and magnesium, 2 facials and
eliminating pizza and soda.. clear skin after two weeks.

The reason I'm on this board and have written a webpage is to help others
since I know what it feels like to be a "walking pimple with a person behind
it". With best regards.

It's called synovial fluid. It helps lubricate the joints. I do a stretching
routine that begins by initiating synovial fluid production. You start with
each individual finger and slowly make circles clockwise, then counter
clockwise. After doing each finger, you move to the wrists, elbows,
shoulders, neck, waists, hips, knees, and ankles. Don't know if you care or
not! ^_^

Oh, I don't doubt that diet is a factor for some people, but I think
it's way overblown in relation to it's relevance ----> for the vast
majority <---- of acne sufferers.

Believe me, I wish it were true (clean up your diet = clear skin).
I've tried every single special dietary approach out there in an
attempt to clear up my skin. You name it I've probably tried it for
months and months on end to no avail. A few of the people I've talked
to have noticed a difference if they stick to a certain kind of
restricted diet, most I've talked to don't notice any difference at
all.

Too often, people get caught up in the "if it worked for me it will
work for you, one size fits all" approach. Just read the post by Kelly
above. "Facials and diet are the key to clear skin"... blah blah blah
blah. And oftentimes the people advocating THE ONE TRUE WAY are
serving an agenda rather than just getting the message out.

Wish it were that simple, but it just isn't.

First, you are rude.

Is yours supposed to be a constructive post, especially where your _______
got caught in the "blah" and caps lock key?

This is a board to share ideas; it's not a treatment room where people could
be individually analyzed and treated. It's also not a place to try to
insult those who are trying to help.

I'm a licensed esthetician and have treated thousands of people with acne.

What are your credentials and how many have you helped with your whining?

And, yes, everyone I treated and counseled improved, some more than others;
most were completely cleared of acne in a few weeks unless there was a
systemic problem for which treatment would be beyond the limits of my scope
of practice. Then, I referred out to other doctors while keeping in touch
with the patient.

<serving an agenda rather than just getting the message out.>

My agenda???? Eat good food; supplement with vitamins/minerals if
necessary; eliminate waste; avoid unnecessary chemicals; practice stress
management. Why in the world would you ever want to discourage anyone from
that?

What is the message you are trying to get out? I know, moaning and
discounting what others say on a board will make pimples go away. Yeah!!

<I've tried every single special dietary approach out there in an attempt to
clear up my skin. You name it I've probably tried it for months and months
on end to no avail. >

Which dietary approaches did you try?

If you did a true dietary analysis and had it analyzed by a professional..a
daily food diary for 3 months, writing down everything you ingested and
changed your diet often throughout, eliminating one food at a time for 3
days, and didn't see a difference, your particular problem may not be diet
related. Or, maybe you didn't eliminate the right food or beverage. Or,
you may not be absorbing enough nutrients from your food. Or, your
digestive system isn't containing all of your food and a test for leaky gut
is in order.

Did you: eliminate all hair products and change your pillowcase every day?

check on the side effects of any drugs you may be taking?

consult an endocrinologist to see if your problem is gland related?

go to a GP to get a general exam and blood work to make sure there is no
pathology behind your problem?

There other thing to keep in mind is that the skin is a really big detox
organ. My acne is really a detox. But it can take months to detox your
body enough to have the acne go away. So a few weeks, two months, etc,
might not be enough time to see results. Especially if you are still
putting toxins into your body.

Third month, I don't remember my Accutane treatment for acne lasting any
longer than that.

I suffered joint pain, oddly enough my heels were the sorest. I was in very
good shape at the time, running 3 miles @7:00 minute pace several times a
week. I'd strongly suspect that the Accutane is causing the joint pain.

most likely, did you cut back on exercising while on accuante or stay at
the same level?

Accutane - I have to go on accutane. How bad does the acne gets worse the first weeks? Is it so bad that you can't go out? Currently, my acne is not so bad but I want it TO GO AWAY AND NEVER COME BACK.

Accutane - Hi there. Im just posting a question about accutane and its effect. Iv been on it for 1 month now. Im 5ft10 and about 65kg. I take 20mg one day and then 40mg next day. Keep alternating like that. So far tho i have not see any effect of accutane. I dont..

Accutane 7th day - Ok, eyes not so dry in the morning anymore. Odd thing is that I haven't had any new acne show up since day 3 and the old stuff has been dissappearing nicely. Sorry Lauksna! Buddee.

Accutane : Day 1 , Cap 1 - Well, the inevitable has happened. Just took my first pill. Luckily Accutane won't be expensive at all... I take 2 x 40mg per day. Normal price is 240$ CAD but it will actually cost me 70$ CAD, thanks to my insurances. Oh we'll see how it goes

Accutane - Been on accutane for nearly 10 weeks now and there is still no 'definate' improvement. Is this normal or should something definate have started to happen by now??
