Post subject: Accutane Side Effect Questions
Archived from groups: alt>skincare>acne (more info?)

Hi,

I am an adult who has been on Accutane for 4 months (60 mg a day) and
was delighted by the results. For the first time in nearly 20 years I
can walk out of my house with flawless skin and not even have to look
in the mirror each morning playing I don't have another blemish.

But, while I have had few side effects during my four months of
treatment (only slightly dry lips that I can easily remedy) I have
noticed two more things in the last week or so that I didn't tie to
the Accutane but now am wondering.

1. I workout every day and and have for years. I noticed about two
weeks ago when lying in bed at night my lower legs and ankles would
acne slightly. Usually only one leg, but not the same one every night.
If it was really bothersome I would use Ben Gay and it would go away.
I thought it was just overworking my legs but now wonder if it's an
Accutane side effect.

The other thing is mood. Last week, I noticed I was very down and
stressed out and that feeling is still with me. It is NOT by any means
"suicidal" but I find I am grumpy, sad and even small things almost
bring me to tears. In fact, I have found myself almost starting
debates with people who normally wouldn't bother me.

It wasn't until this morning that I began to wonder if my poor mood is
related to Accutane also.

I know I can easily call my doctor, but wanted some feedback first
from other adults that have taken accutane. Is it odd for mood and
muscle ache side effects to kick in after several months of Accutane?
I would have expected them early on.

I am happy with Accutane's results with my acne and I guess I could
use Ben Gay, chalk my mood up to Accutane and try and keep my spirits
up until I end treatment in Mid-November, but wanted to get some
feedback.

I was on Accutane 4 times between 1985 and 2000. The last 3 times, I
did experience quite a bit of stiffness and pain in the area behind my
heels.

It used to be that muscle and joint pain was expected. But things may
have changed. The Walgreens website says this:

"CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience mood or personality
changes including depression, aggressive or violent behavior, or
suicidal thoughts or tendencies; back, joint, or muscle pain;"

So you are experiencing two things -- personality changes and muscle
pain -- for which Walgreens believes you should contact your doctor
immediately (they have an even more alarmist section where you are
also supposed to stop taking the drug as well as call your doctor. But
in the case of mood changes and muscle pain, they don't advise you to
stop taking the drug, just to call your doctor).

So give your doctor a call. I can guess he/she will advise you to hang
in there and keep an eye on your mood, since you are close to
finishing your course.

Let us know what he/she says.

Joint pain (such as your leg aches) are a common side effect, which is
what my dermatologist notified me of. I have shoulder tendonitis and
I'm experiencing some aches unrelated to activity again. I've been on
Accutane for 1 week.
